Swan Neck Flask Experiment — Free Diagram Editor

Connect each experimental condition to the path of air, trapped dust and the resulting broth contamination.

The swan neck flask experiment shows how airborne contamination differs from spontaneous generation. SciFig provides three related diagrams: an intact curved neck, a broken neck and a tilted flask whose broth contacts trapped dust. Choose the intact, broken or tilted condition, then edit its corresponding labels. Keep the experimental change connected to the visible contamination route, and export a reference, worksheet or answer version.

  • Show how the intact curved neck works
  • Compare the broken-neck condition
  • Illustrate contact after tilting
  • Create a controlled comparison set

Three Conditions, One Experiment

Compare air access, dust trapping and broth contact across intact, broken and tilted conditions.

Show how the intact curved neck works

The intact view keeps the flask open to air while dust is trapped in the bend of the neck. The broth and curved passage have separate labels. This distinction lets the figure explain why access to air did not, by itself, make the heated broth develop microbial growth. The swan neck flask experiment diagram keeps the open air route separate from the trapped dust.

  • Air access remains open
  • Dust trapped in the bend
  • Separate broth and neck labels

Compare the broken-neck condition

Switch to the broken-neck view to show a more direct contamination route. The break is drawn in the glass rather than indicated only by a changed caption. The corresponding label set follows the selected condition, so the break and exposed route can be identified in an exercise. Compare the intact neck with the broken neck to explain the Pasteur experiment.

  • Visible break in the neck
  • Direct contamination route
  • Condition-specific anchors
Compare the broken neck

Illustrate contact after tilting

The tilted view rotates the flask and shows a horizontal liquid surface reaching the dust-containing bend. The contact point is part of the drawing. This makes it possible to explain how broth can encounter the trapped material even when the characteristic curved neck remains present.

  • Tilted glass geometry
  • Horizontal liquid level
  • Visible broth–dust contact

Create a controlled comparison set

Use labeled, numbered, blank or answer versions for each condition. Each view has its own structure anchors. Export SVG or PNG figures for a comparison slide and save project JSON to restore the chosen condition, vocabulary and label placement.

How to Prepare the Flask Comparison

Choose a flask condition first, then edit its labels and select the teaching version to export.

  1. Choose the structure or stage

Open the local editor and start with its labeled view. For an experiment or mechanism with multiple stages, choose the condition that matches the explanation you are preparing.

  2. Edit the structure labels

Select a part, edit its name and move the label endpoint with the pointer or coordinate controls. Its structure anchor stays attached to the defined component.

  3. Prepare the practice version

Switch to numbered, blank or answer mode as needed. The practice figure and its answer list use the same part order for the selected structure or stage.

  4. Download or save the project

Download SVG or PNG from the current valid figure. Save project JSON when you want to restore the labels, positions and display mode for another session.

Experiment Figures for Scientific Reasoning

Connect the experimental change, observed contamination and conclusion in lessons and worksheets.

swan neck flask experiment diagram: intact neck

History of microbiology lesson

Introduce the experiment by distinguishing pre-existing microorganisms from spontaneous generation. Use the intact view to explain why air and airborne particulate material are different experimental factors.

Controlled experiment activity

Place the intact and broken-neck exports beside each other. Ask learners to identify which path changes and how that affects contamination.

Tilting demonstration

Use the tilted flask to discuss contact between broth and dust in the bend. The liquid reaches the trapped material in the actual drawing.

Worked Examples Prepared with SciFig

In the swan neck flask experiment reference, I kept the curved passage open while marking the dust trap in its bend. The broth has a separate label. This figure makes the distinction between access to air and contact with trapped material visible without changing the glass into a sealed container.
