Free Gene Regulation Diagram Generator

Connect an activator, a repressor and a target gene with signed relationships, then compare feedback and custom-edge presets.

A gene regulation diagram shows how regulatory factors activate or repress gene expression. SciFig provides a bounded factor, repressor, target-gene and product model with editable labels, activating arrows, inhibitory terminals and an optional negative-feedback connection.

  • Edit signed regulatory relationships

Gene Regulation Diagram Features

SciFig’s gene regulation diagram brings the inputs, diagram choices and exported result into one focused tool.

Connect a regulator with its target

Place a regulatory factor and target gene in a clear relationship diagram. Label the factor and gene with the names used in your material. The figure focuses on the regulatory connection, allowing the audience to see which factor acts on which target before considering a larger network.

  • Name the regulatory factor
  • Label its target gene
  • Retain the edge direction

Distinguish activation from repression

Choose an arrow for activation or a blunt-ended edge for repression. Changing the relationship type preserves the preset objects while changing the stated effect. Distinct endpoints keep the connection readable when the figure is viewed in grayscale or placed beside a different color palette.

  • Use activation arrowheads
  • Use repression terminals
  • Distinguish effects by the connector endpoint

Explain a regulatory feedback loop

Use the feedback preset to show how a downstream product or regulator connects back to an earlier regulatory step. Feedback is a relationship in the supplied mechanism, not a prediction from expression values. A focused loop helps a lesson explain regulation beyond a one-way pathway.

  • Show a returning regulatory edge
  • Label the loop components
  • Distinguish feedback from a linear chain

Edit a compact regulatory model

Connect the preset activator, repressor, target gene and product with the relationships needed for your explanation. Rename the objects, choose each connection’s effect and export the resulting figure. The diagram records the connections you enter rather than inferring a network from an RNA-seq table.

  • Rename the preset regulatory objects
  • Add or remove signed connections
  • Export the entered model as SVG or PNG

How to Create the Figure

Use the gene regulation diagram controls below to prepare the figure from your selected mechanism and labels.

  1. Choose a regulator-target example

Start with the overview, an activating example or a repressing example. The diagram gives the regulatory factors and target gene a stable arrangement. Choose the preset that expresses the type of relationship you want to explain before editing names.

  2. Set edges and feedback

Choose source and target nodes and select activation or inhibition for the supplied relationship. Change or remove existing edges as needed. Turn on the gene-product feedback option when the explanation includes that returning regulatory connection rather than a one-way sequence.

  3. Edit the title and labels

Enter a descriptive title and replace the node or structure labels with the terminology used in your document. The preset retains its arrangement while the visible names change. Keep molecular abbreviations consistent with the explanation beside the figure.

  4. Download the labeled figure

Choose SVG for a scalable vector figure or PNG for a slide, handout or document. The exported diagram retains the selected view and labels. Keep the figure alongside the corresponding explanation so later wording changes can be reflected in another export.

Gene Regulation Diagram Uses

Use a labeled gene regulation diagram to connect the explanation in your material with a visible figure.

Gene regulation model with an activator and repressor connected to one target gene and its product

Explain transcriptional regulation

A teaching panel can place an activator and a repressor beside one target gene. Label the regulatory objects and give each connection its stated effect, so the reader sees how control relates to the gene product without confusing the panel with the stages of protein synthesis.

Compare positive and negative control

Prepare two diagrams with the same regulator and target names but different edge types. Students can compare activation arrows with repression terminals while the objects stay familiar. The endpoint shapes remain in the exported figure, keeping each stated relationship readable outside the lesson slide.

Introduce feedback in a seminar

Turn on the feedback connection to show the gene product returning to its regulator. Compare this view with a diagram that has the same labels and no feedback. The two panels make the changed relationship visible during a seminar or lab discussion.

Summarize a small regulatory network

A project overview can show an activator and repressor acting on a target gene, together with its product. Label the preset objects and choose each relationship type. This creates a compact mechanism panel without presenting an inferred expression network or a differential-expression calculation.

Connect regulation and expression data

Place the regulatory diagram beside an independently prepared expression chart. Keep factor and target names consistent across panels, and use the diagram to state the relationships being discussed. A heatmap can summarize the measurements separately; the diagram itself does not calculate differential expression.

Prepare a gene-control reference

Export a labeled SVG for a manuscript panel or PNG for study notes. Retain the regulator, target and product names and distinct connection endpoints in the figure. A protein-synthesis diagram can separately explain transcription and translation when that broader context is needed.

How Researchers Use SciFig

My teaching panel needed an activator and repressor acting on the same gene, not another transcription-and-translation sequence. The gene regulation diagram kept the factor, target and product together. I chose the connection types and exported the figure so the class could compare how the stated effects changed the mechanism explanation.
