SciFig Terms of Service

1. Your Agreement to These Terms

• These terms govern your use of SciFig's scientific illustration, chart and flowchart tools. Using the service means you agree to these terms and the applicable plan rules. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information.

2. Changes to These Terms

• We may update these terms. We notify you of significant changes through the service or your account email. Continuing to use the service after the effective date means you accept the updated terms.

3. Account and Registration

3.1 Account Requirements

Some features require an account. Provide accurate information and keep it up to date.

3.2 Eligibility

You must be at least 13, or the minimum age required locally. Users under 18 need permission from a parent or guardian.

3.3 Account Security and Responsibility

Keep your sign-in details secure and use the service responsibly. If acting for an organization, you must have authority to accept these terms. We may restrict or close accounts for misuse, legal or security reasons, unpaid fees or prolonged inactivity. Keep copies of content you need.

4. User Conduct and Prohibited Activities

4.1 Prohibited Uses

Do not use the service for the activities below. Violations may lead to content removal or account restriction, and may be dealt with as required by law.

• Harming or exploiting minors.
• Creating misleading scientific information with intent to deceive or cause harm.
• Misusing identifiable personal information.
• Infringing intellectual property, privacy or other rights.
• Harassment or abuse.
• Fully automated decisions that harm someone's legal rights, or discriminatory uses.
• Uses prohibited by law or applicable journal, publisher or marketplace policies.
• Providing regulated professional advice without the required qualifications and disclosures.
• Creating, attempting to create, storing or distributing pornography, nudity, obscene material or other sexual content.
• Creating, attempting to create, storing or distributing child sexual abuse material or sexualized depictions of minors.
• Deepfakes or realistic depictions of identifiable people without their explicit written consent.
• Graphic violence, cruelty, depictions of weapons, weapon-making instructions, or promotion of hatred, discrimination or violence against protected groups.

4.2 Technical Restrictions

Do not:

• Reverse engineer the service, except where applicable law permits it.
• Remove ownership notices or labels.
• Resell or commercially exploit the service itself without permission. Permitted use of your figures is covered in Section 5.
• Use automated tools to scrape or extract service data.
• Upload malicious software or code.
• Disrupt the service or access systems or accounts without permission.

4.3 Scientific Integrity

AI-generated or edited images are illustrations, not measurements, and must not replace original research data. Do not use the service to generate, enhance, reconstruct or otherwise alter images that record experimental or clinical observations. Charts are calculated and plotted from the data you supply; verify the source data, calculations and result. Follow your publisher's or institution's AI disclosure rules when publishing.

5. Your Content and Figure Usage Rights

5.1 Definitions

Input means materials you provide, including prompts, files and data. Output means figures and other materials generated or edited through SciFig. Your content includes your input and your changes to output. SciFig materials are the software and other materials that make up the service.

5.2 Ownership of User Content

You retain the rights to the materials you provide. You own the scientific figures you generate with SciFig and can use them for publication and commercial purposes. SciFig claims no ownership of your figures.

5.3 Publication and Commercial Use

You receive a non-exclusive, worldwide, permanent license to use generated output for commercial, academic and publishing purposes. You retain the rights to your inputs and your own contributions. SciFig claims no ownership of your generated scientific figures.

5.4 License Documents

You can download a license PDF for your figures for free. The document records the figure, its creator and the publication and commercial use license.

5.5 Editing Output

You may edit and combine output with other materials within your usage rights. SciFig claims no ownership of your own edits or contributions.

5.6 How SciFig May Use Your Content

You give SciFig a limited, non-exclusive license to store, process, display and transmit your content as needed to provide, maintain and improve the service. This does not allow us to train or improve AI models using your content, or provide it to others for that purpose. See our Privacy Policy for details.

5.7 Rights to Your Input

You must have the rights and permissions needed to upload and use your input and ensure it does not infringe others' rights.

Check the rules of your target journal, publisher, institution or marketplace before using output. Permission under these terms does not replace their approval or disclosure requirements.

6. Paid Services and Payments

6.1 Paid Services

Some features require a subscription or credits. Prices and included features are shown before purchase. We may change available plans and features subject to applicable law.

6.2 Purchase, Billing, and Renewal

Stripe processes payments. Subscriptions renew automatically at the price agreed when purchased until you cancel. Paid subscription credits and purchased credit packs do not expire; unused balances carry over and remain usable after cancellation. Monthly and annual subscriptions issue credits monthly. If you cancel an annual renewal, monthly issues continue through the paid year. Reward credits keep their stated expiry. Credits that expired before this policy took effect are not reinstated. Refunds follow Section 6.3 and remove unused credits from the refunded payment.

6.3 Refunds

You can request a refund within 7 days of a subscription payment, renewal or credit-pack purchase if credits used since that payment do not exceed 10% of the applicable allowance.

Usage includes all credits spent after payment, including reward credits. The allowance is one month's credits for monthly and annual subscriptions, or the credits in the purchased pack.

Approved refunds return 90% of the amount actually paid after discounts to the original payment method; the remaining 10% covers payment processing. Used discounts are not reinstated. A refunded subscription ends immediately, and unused credits from that payment are removed.

If you have already used the generated figures in a publication, product or other public material, you should not request a refund.

Credits reserved for a task that ends without a deliverable result are returned automatically once its outcome is confirmed. This is separate from a cash refund and requires no request.

Email hello@scifig.ai from the account you paid with to apply. Other payments are non-refundable unless applicable law requires otherwise. Your mandatory legal rights are not limited by this policy.

6.4 Reward Credits

Reward credits include sign-up, check-in, invitation and Scholars Program rewards. They have no cash value, cannot be transferred or sold, and are not refundable. They expire as stated on the relevant program page; expired rewards are not reinstated.

Amounts, eligibility and program duration are described on those pages. We may change or end a program without affecting rewards already granted. Rewards obtained through abuse may be withheld or removed.

Using reward credits counts toward the refund usage limit in Section 6.3. The same-browser 90-day sign-up reward window affects only that reward, not normal account use or purchases.

7. Intellectual Property Complaints and Repeat Infringers

• We may remove infringing content and close repeat infringers' accounts. To report infringement, email hello@scifig.ai with the work and material concerned, where it appears, your contact details, and statements that you believe the use is unauthorized and that your report is accurate under penalty of perjury.

8. Third-Party Services

• SciFig uses third-party services for AI processing, payments, hosting and analytics. Their terms may apply when you use them directly. Our Privacy Policy describes data sharing. This does not remove responsibilities we must meet under these terms or applicable law.

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

• The service and output are provided as available, without guarantees of uninterrupted access, error-free operation or suitability for a particular purpose. To the extent allowed by law, we exclude implied warranties, including ownership and non-infringement. Your mandatory legal rights remain unaffected.

10. Limitation of Liability

• To the extent permitted by law, SciFig is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, including lost profits, revenue, data or goodwill. Our total liability for claims arising from the service or these terms is limited to the subscription fees you paid in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim. This does not limit liability or rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.

11. Claims and Costs

• You agree to defend SciFig and its affiliates, officers, directors, employees and agents against claims, and cover losses and reasonable costs, including legal fees, arising from your use of the service or output, your content, breach of these terms or applicable law, or infringement of others' rights, to the extent allowed by law.

12. Dispute Resolution and Governing Law

• These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Contact hello@scifig.ai before starting a formal dispute so we can try to resolve it; we will respond within 30 days. Unresolved disputes are subject to the courts of England and Wales. Consumers retain any mandatory protections and rights to bring claims in their home jurisdiction. Either party may seek urgent court protection for intellectual property, confidential information or service misuse. Nothing here limits rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded.
