Does a certificate cost credits?

No. Issuing a certificate is free, uses no credits and happens instantly.

What happens to my certificates if I cancel?

They stay valid. The license attaches when a figure version is created and is permanent, so cancelling a subscription or using up a credit pack does not affect figures you created while paid.

What does someone see when they scan the QR code?

Only the certificate number, a masked licensee name, the issue date, the figure type and whether the certificate is valid, not valid (a free-plan sample) or revoked — never the figure, the prompt or your account details.

I changed my figure. Do I need a new certificate?

Yes. Each version you create — by regenerating, editing with AI, adjusting by hand or saving in the Canvas — gets its own certificate, based on when that version was created. Downloading again for an unchanged version returns the same certificate.

Verification

Verification without exposure

Every certificate carries a QR code and a private link. Opening it shows just enough to confirm the certificate is genuine and current.

Shown: the certificate number, a masked licensee name, the issue date, the figure type and the status (valid, not valid or revoked).
Never shown: the figure itself, your prompt or your account details.
Unpublished work stays private: Sharing the verification link does not reveal the figure. The full certificate PDF includes a preview of the figure.

What it covers

Illustration, DataChart, FlowChart and Canvas figures created or edited on SciFig while your account had paid access — a subscription or a credit pack. This includes AI-generated results, images you upscaled, cut out or vectorized, and versions you edited by hand.
Any lawful commercial or academic use, including journal articles, theses, conference presentations, posters, grant applications and textbooks.
The license attaches the moment a version is created on SciFig and is permanent. It stays valid after you cancel a subscription or use up a credit pack.
Not covered: figures created on the free plan or during a refunded period, and imported files or templates you have not edited yet. When a figure includes material you supplied, such as an uploaded image, the license covers only what was produced on SciFig.

What it does not mean

It is not a copyright registration.
It is not a legal opinion.
It does not guarantee acceptance by any journal or publisher.
It does not transfer rights in material you supplied yourself, such as your text, data or reference images.

When to get a new certificate

Every new version has its own certificate — whether you regenerated it, edited it with AI, adjusted it by hand or saved it in the Canvas.
Downloading again for the same version returns the same certificate number and issue date.
Deleting a conversation does not delete its certificate records. You can check their current status until you delete your account.

What to send to a journal

Your final figure file.
The certificate PDF for that exact version of the figure.
Any acknowledgement or disclosure statement your target journal requires.

FAQ

Publication license questions

You can download a sample certificate to see what it looks like, but it is marked as not valid, carries a watermark and does not grant a publication license: versions created or edited on the free plan are outside the paid license (Terms §5.4). Scanning its code also shows that it is not valid. Upgrading does not make those existing versions valid; a new version you create or edit while your account has paid access can get a valid certificate. Versions created or edited during a period for which you received a refund are not covered either (Terms §6.3(e)).
