What size is an A1 poster?

A1 is 594 x 841 mm, or 23.39 x 33.11 inches, in portrait. Landscape is the same sheet turned. A1 is exactly half an A0, which is why the two sizes share proportions and a poster laid out for one can be re-canvased to the other.

Is an A1 poster big enough for a conference?

It depends on the board. Many conferences specify A0 and an A1 poster will look undersized pinned to an A0 board. A1 is the right choice when the instructions say A1, when boards are half-height, or for departmental and student showcase days. Check the acceptance email before printing.

Why is the A1 template not just a scaled-down A0?

Because proportional scaling would drop body text below the readable floor. Applying the A1 ratio to A0's 26 pt body text gives roughly 18 pt, which is caption size, not body size. So the A1 files hold body text at the same 26 pt as A0 and take the reduction out of the title, headings and captions instead — 60 pt title, 40 pt authors, 32 pt headings, 26 pt body, 18 pt captions.

What font size should an A1 poster use?

Title 60 pt, authors 40 pt, section headings 32 pt, body 26 pt, captions 18 pt. These are already applied, and the first slide of the file states them. Body text is the same 26 pt as on an A0 board rather than a scaled-down version — 26 pt is the floor for both, and an A1 board is read from closer anyway.

Can I print an A1 poster at home?

Not on a standard office printer — A1 is 594 x 841 mm, far larger than A3. University print services and commercial shops handle it as a standard size. Export to PDF first so fonts do not substitute.

Research poster layout for A1: Classic, Four column and Spotlight

Every file ships with one layout already applied — you are picking a layout by picking a file, not deleting slides.

Here is what each one is for.

Classic — the default
Three columns with RESULTS given the widest one. This is what most A1 boards look like and what reviewers scan fastest: introduction and methods on the left, the finding in the middle at the size it deserves, discussion on the right. Pick this unless you have a reason not to.
Four column — for text-heavy work
Four even columns across the board. Use it when you genuinely have more to say — systematic reviews, multi-arm trials, anything with several sub-studies. The trade-off is that no single panel dominates, so it is the wrong choice if one figure is the whole story.
Spotlight — one hero figure
A #betterposter-style board: one large central finding with the supporting detail moved to the sides. It works when a single figure or one sentence carries the result, and it fails when the argument needs several steps. Reviewers who dislike the format usually dislike it for that reason.

Use A1 when the conference asks for it or the hall is small; A0 is the default for most European meetings.

Follow the conference instruction first — it overrides everything below.
A1 suits departmental days, student showcases, and halls with half-height boards.
A0 is the default at most European conferences; an A1 poster on an A0 board looks undersized.
The two share proportions, so a layout built for one re-canvases to the other cleanly. Change the type scale when you do.
