Journal Citation Reports releases annually, and the value published in a given year describes citations from the previous year. So the figure you can verify today is the 2025 Journal Impact Factor, released in the 2026 JCR cycle. A page claiming a "2026 impact factor" for any journal is either mislabelling the 2025 value or making something up.

Where this number comes from and how to check it

The 18.1 and 18.9 figures above are taken from Nature Portfolio's own journal metrics page for Nature Communications, which is where the publisher states them. The underlying metric is Clarivate's Journal Impact Factor, computed from Journal Citation Reports data.

To verify independently:

  3. Confirm you are comparing the same citation year across journals — mixing a 2025 JIF with a 2024 JIF makes a comparison meaningless

What an 18.1 does and does not tell you

What it tells you. Papers in Nature Communications are, on average, well cited — this is a high-visibility venue in the biological, physical, chemical and Earth sciences. The five-year figure being slightly higher (18.9) suggests citation accumulation is not front-loaded into the first two years, which matters if your work is the kind that gets cited slowly.
What it does not tell you. The impact factor is a journal average, and citation distributions in multidisciplinary journals are heavily skewed — a minority of papers earn a large share of the citations. Your paper's citation count will be determined by your field, your topic and your paper, not by the journal's mean.

More practically, the number tells you nothing about the two things that actually decide your outcome:

  • Whether an editor will send your paper out for review. Nature Communications has no external editorial board; decisions are made by full-time professional editors who are PhD-level scientists. Your abstract and cover letter have to convince a generalist that the advance is significant within your field.
  • Whether you can afford it. The APC is $7,350 (or £5,490 / €6,150), determined by the acceptance date, with no submission or page charges. Waivers and discounts exist for corresponding authors in the lowest-income countries.

Two metrics you will see quoted elsewhere are not on the publisher's page: CiteScore and h-index. Both are computed by third parties over windows that differ between databases, which is why the values circulating for any given journal often disagree. If you quote one, name the database and the year alongside it.

Springer Nature states on that same page that it is a signatory of the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment, and that it does not regard these citation measures as measures of journal quality.

Most people arriving at this question are really asking a different one: which of two journals should I send this paper to? An impact factor is a poor instrument for that, because the two journals in any realistic pairing are usually close enough that the number is not what separates them.

What actually separates journals at this level. When two venues sit within a few points of each other, the number stops discriminating and four other things start:
  • Scope fit. A generalist editor has to see the advance as significant to a broad readership. This decides more desk rejections than quality does.
  • What you are allowed to show. Ten display items is a real constraint if your evidence is figure-heavy. Journals differ enormously here, and it is checkable before you submit rather than after.
  • What the review record will look like afterwards. At some venues a critical review disappears when you submit elsewhere; at others it is published alongside the paper permanently.
  • What the APC costs and when it is charged. On acceptance versus at review start is a materially different funding problem.

Should you submit to Nature Communications?

Submit if:
  • Your work is a significant advance within its field, even if it lacks the cross-disciplinary reach of Nature itself
  • You need a fully open access venue with a recognised journal-level metric
  • Your figures and tables fit within 10 display items
  • Your funding covers a $7,350 APC, or you qualify for a waiver
Think twice if:
  • Your study genuinely needs more than 10 display items to present its evidence
  • The APC is not covered and no waiver applies
  • Your finding is incremental within a narrow specialty — a strong field journal may reach your actual readers more effectively
  • You are relying on the venue's name rather than the significance of the advance

Before you submit: figure requirements

The requirement most likely to cost you time is not the metric — it is figure preparation. Nature Communications requires vector format for all line art (EPS, AI or PDF, exported directly from the source application, not flattened), photographs as TIFF at 300 DPI, and figures built to exact column widths of 88 mm or 180 mm.
