PLOS ONE's impact factor is 2.8 — the 2025 JIF, from the 2026 JCR release.

It sits in Q2 of Multidisciplinary Sciences, up from 2.6 in the previous metric year.

What is PLOS ONE's impact factor?

2.8 — the 2025 Journal Impact Factor, from the 2026 Journal Citation Reports release. That is up from 2.6 in the previous metric year, and it places the journal in Q2 of the Multidisciplinary Sciences category.
PLOS does not publish the number itself. It is a signatory of the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment and says so plainly on the journal's own information page:

"We do not consider Impact Factor to be a reliable or useful metric to assess the performance of individual articles but will provide the metric to individuals when specifically requested."

The second half of that sentence is the useful part: PLOS holds the figure and will give it to you if you ask. If the number is going into a tenure packet or a grant report, that request is a stronger citation than any aggregator, and it is a short email — the how is below.
A 2.8 at PLOS ONE means something different from a 2.8 elsewhere, because the journal reviews for methodological soundness rather than novelty and publishes at a scale almost nothing else matches. That is the part worth ten minutes, and it is covered further down.

You searched 2026 — why this is the 2025 JIF

The Journal Citation Reports run a year behind their release. The release that appeared in June 2026 reports impact factors calculated from 2025 citation data, so "the 2026 impact factor" and "the 2025 JIF" are the same number by two different naming conventions — for PLOS ONE, 2.8.

Which name you should use depends on who is reading:

  • On a grant or promotion form, write it as the 2025 JIF from the 2026 JCR release. That is unambiguous and survives being checked.
  • When comparing journals, make sure every figure in the comparison comes from the same release. A 2.8 from the 2026 release and a competitor's number from the 2025 release are not comparable, and mixed-vintage tables are the most common way a shortlist goes wrong.

The value for the previous metric year was 2.6. If a source shows you 2.6 and calls it current, it is a release behind.

Where this number comes from, and how to check it yourself

The chain is short: Clarivate calculates the JIF and publishes it in the Journal Citation Reports; JCR is a paid database; sites that surface the values for free are re-reporting them. PLOS sits outside that chain by choice, and says so:

"All of our journals have a range of metrics available, including the Journal Impact Factor™, SJR, CiteScore, and h-index, which are available from the respective databases. In line with our DORA commitment, these subjective metrics are not promoted by PLOS."

Three ways to verify, in descending order of authority:

1 · Ask PLOS. The journal information page states that PLOS "will provide the metric to individuals when specifically requested." A short email to the journal office asking for the current Journal Impact Factor for PLOS ONE gets you the figure from the publisher itself — which is a stronger citation than any aggregator, and worth the two days it takes if the number is going into a tenure packet or a funder report.
2 · Look it up in JCR. If your institution subscribes to Web of Science, the Journal Citation Reports entry for ISSN 1932-6203 is the primary record, complete with the category rank and the quartile boundary that produced it.
3 · Confirm the indexing. Clarivate's Master Journal List is free and does not require a subscription. Searching ISSN 1932-6203 confirms that PLOS ONE is in the Web of Science Core Collection under the Science Citation Index Expanded — which is what makes it eligible for a JIF at all. It does not display the value.

Is PLOS ONE Q1 or Q2?

Q2, in Multidisciplinary Sciences. That placement is reported consistently by the third-party JCR compilations, and it is the category you would expect: PLOS ONE takes research across more than two hundred subject areas, so it is ranked against other broad-scope journals rather than against the specialist journals in your own field.

The indexing underneath it is checkable at the primary source. Clarivate's Master Journal List records:

Two practical consequences. If your institution's rules are written around SCIE-listed journals, PLOS ONE qualifies. If they are written around Q1 journals in a named category, it does not — and no amount of arguing about the breadth of the category changes the box on the form.

Is PLOS ONE's impact factor rising or falling?

Neither, on any horizon short enough to matter. It fell for most of the 2010s, spiked in 2020–2021, and has settled around 2.6–2.9 since. The year-by-year series compiled by third-party JCR sites reads:

That series comes from a third-party compilation rather than from Clarivate or PLOS, so treat the shape as reliable and individual decimal places as approximate. The shape is the informative part. The journal sat between 2.7 and 3.1 for most of the second half of the 2010s, rose to 3.752 in 2021 and 3.7 in 2022, and has since come back to where it spent that earlier stretch — so the recent decline reads as a return to the journal's own baseline rather than a fall below it.

What this means when you are choosing where to submit: a 0.2 movement year to year is noise. If a committee is comparing your paper's venue against another at 3.0, they are comparing two journals that have swapped places repeatedly over the last decade.

Beyond the headline: h5-index, CiteScore, and SJR

The JIF is one indicator among several, and searches for PLOS ONE routinely pair it with the others. Here is what can be stated and what cannot.

SJR: 0.726 (2025). The SCImago Journal Rank is derived from Scopus data and weights citations by the prestige of the citing journal, so a journal cited by selective venues scores higher than its raw citation count alone would suggest. At 0.726 PLOS ONE sits below the multidisciplinary leaders on this measure, which is the same story the JIF tells.
Five-year JIF: reported as 3.3. Only one of the compilations checked carries a five-year value, so this one comes with a limiter that the headline figure does not need. Treat it as a reported figure of roughly 3.3, and if a five-year number is going somewhere consequential, get it from JCR or from PLOS rather than from this page.
CiteScore: check it at the source. Third-party sites disagree on PLOS ONE's CiteScore, and averaging disagreeing sources produces a number that is in no database. CiteScore is calculated by Elsevier from Scopus, and the Scopus source page for ISSN 1932-6203 displays the current value along with the citation window used — that is a two-minute check and it settles the question.
h-index: several hundred, and database-dependent. OpenAlex reports an h-index of 600 for the journal. Other databases will not match that, and the mismatch is not an error: an h-index is not issued by a single authority, and different databases compute it over different citation windows and different source sets. Quote it as a magnitude, name the database and expect to be asked which one.
h5-index: 244, with an h5-median of 336. These come from Google Scholar Metrics, which is not a third party for this figure — the h5-index is Google Scholar's own metric, defined as the h-index of articles published in the last five complete years, and Scholar Metrics is where it is published. It sits alongside a JIF of 2.8 without contradicting it, because the two measure different things: the JIF is a mean citation rate over a two-year window, while the h5-index rewards a journal for having many well-cited papers and is therefore strongly influenced by how much a journal publishes. PLOS ONE publishes on the order of 18,000 articles a year, which is why a journal with a JIF under 3 carries an h5-index in the mid-200s. Neither number is wrong; they answer different questions, which is exactly why people search for both together.

What this number does not tell you

An impact factor describes a citation distribution for a whole journal. For PLOS ONE specifically, three things it does not tell you matter more than usual:

  • What gets accepted. PLOS ONE's stated publication criteria assess technical soundness, not perceived importance. The seven criteria cover originality, prior publication, technical standard, whether conclusions follow from the data, intelligible English, research ethics, and reporting and data-availability standards. Novelty is not among them. A journal that does not select for significance will have a citation profile that looks nothing like one that does.
  • What your own paper will do. Journal-level averages are dominated by a small number of heavily cited papers in any venue, and in a journal publishing 18,300 articles a year, the average tells you very little about any individual article.
  • Whether your figures will pass production. Editorial acceptance at PLOS ONE is provisional, and formatting is checked afterwards. That is a separate gate from peer review, and it is the one most likely to add weeks to your timeline.

Preparing figures for PLOS ONE

If PLOS ONE is on your shortlist, the figure rules are unusual in two directions at once, and both are worth knowing before you draw anything.

Unusually permissive on quantity. PLOS ONE states that there are "no restrictions on word count, number of figures, or amount of supporting information." If your study genuinely needs fourteen panels of primary data, that is not a problem here.
Unusually specific on the file. Figures must be TIFF or EPS, 789–2250 pixels wide at 300 dpi, no taller than 2625 pixels, under 10 MB, with any text set in Arial, Times or Symbol at 8–12 point. Those are hard requirements at production, and a scientific figure that misses them comes back.

Should you submit to PLOS ONE?

Submit if:
  • Your work is methodologically sound but not the kind of result that wins a novelty argument — the publication criteria do not include one
  • You need more figures, more supporting information or more words than a display-item cap would allow
  • Replication studies, negative results or null results are what you have; all three are explicitly in scope
  • Your work is interdisciplinary enough that specialist journals keep sending it away as out of scope
  • A 26% acceptance rate and a 32-day median to first decision fit your timeline better than a longer shot at a selective venue
Think twice if:
  • Your evaluation environment requires a Q1 journal in a named category
  • $2,477 is not covered by a grant, an institutional agreement or a fee-assistance route — the fee is payable on acceptance, which is late to discover it
  • You need the venue's name to do the signalling work by itself
  • Your timeline cannot absorb a 209-day median from submission to publication
