The useful answer is therefore more than one headline number: the publisher also reports the journal's submission profile, turnaround medians, and several non-JIF indicators. Put those pieces together before deciding whether the journal fits your paper.

What is Science Advances's impact factor?

The publisher reports a 13.9 two-year Impact Factor for Science Advances. It also reports a 14.8 five-year Impact Factor. The 2026 JCR release reflects 2025 data, so this page uses the label 2025 Journal Impact Factor, 2026 JCR release for the displayed two-year value. These are citation-based journal metrics, not acceptance probabilities and not a prediction of how many citations your paper will receive.
The source table says that its citation-based metrics originate from Web of Science and Scopus and are current as of June 2026. The page is maintained by AAAS for the Science family of journals, so it is the right first stop when you need the publisher's current public figure.

The profile and turnaround rows cover research articles, reports, and research resources. They exclude reviews and analytical reviews, so do not use the table as if every manuscript category shared the same rate or timeline.

You searched 2026 — why this is the 2025 JIF

A 2026 search often mixes three different clocks:

  1. The publisher's journal profile labels the submission and acceptance data as the full year 2025.
  2. The turnaround table reports medians from January 2025 through December 2025.
  3. The citation-based metrics table says its data are current as of June 2026.
  4. Clarivate describes the 2026 JCR release as reflecting 2025 data.

That is why this page calls the number the 2026 public figure while preserving the publisher's own metric labels. Do not compare it with a value from a different release without checking the JCR release year, metric year, and the two-year versus five-year definition.

Where this number comes from, and how to check it yourself

Open AAAS's Journal metrics page and find the Science Advances row under Citation-based metrics. The row lists the two-year Impact Factor, five-year Impact Factor, Immediacy Index, Eigenfactor score, Article Influence Score, h-index, and CiteScore.

The source page explicitly attributes the first group to Web of Science and the CiteScore to Scopus. That attribution matters: a publisher page can display several measures without making them interchangeable. Record the date you checked, then compare like with like in later reviews.

Is Science Advances Q1? Quartile and category rank

The current supporting JCR record lists Science Advances as Q1 in Multidisciplinary Sciences, with a checked category rank of 12th. That gives you the direct quartile answer for journal shortlisting.
The AAAS public metrics table publishes the 13.9 Impact Factor but does not expose those JCR fields, so this Q1 line is identified as a current supporting JCR record rather than an AAAS field.

Is Science Advances's impact factor rising or falling?

Yes. The latest two comparable two-year JIF releases rose from 12.5 in 2024 to 13.9 in 2025, a change of +1.4. The recent two-release direction is therefore up.

This answers the recent direction question; it is not a claim that the long-term series is a straight line.

Use them for different decisions:

  • Immediacy is about how quickly recent work is cited.

Do not average these values into a homemade ranking. First decide whether you need speed, long-run visibility, field fit, or a publication-policy match.

Science Advances vs peers

The same AAAS table makes a controlled comparison possible within the Science family. It lists Science at 47.3 for the two-year Impact Factor and Science Immunology at 16.4, alongside Science Advances at 13.9. That is useful context, but the titles have different scopes, article mixes, and editorial missions.
A better peer comparison asks whether your paper matches Science Advances's multidisciplinary remit and whether the journal's review and production timeline fits your project. What this number does not tell you

The Impact Factor does not tell you:

  • or whether the publication charge fits your funding plan.

Preparing figures for Science Advances

The figure guide is unusually concrete about resolution, line weight, type size, and final width. It asks for 300 dpi raster images at final print size, 1200 dpi black-and-white line art, a minimum of 6 points for text, and at least 0.28 point line weight. It also gives 3.55 inches for one-column width and 7.25 inches for two-column width.

Science Advances is a plausible target when the work makes a substantial advance and can speak across disciplinary boundaries. The public profile shows an 8.8% accept rate for the covered research content and a 16.4% external review rate, so a high Impact Factor should not be read as an easy route to review.

Submit when all three answers are yes:

  1. The central result is a major advance rather than only a local optimization.
  2. The article type and evidence package fit the journal's scope and review model.
  3. You can meet the manuscript, figure, supplementary-file, and APC requirements if the paper is accepted.

If the paper is strong but narrowly specialist, compare the fit with a field journal rather than using the Impact Factor alone.
