Landscape or portrait — which orientation to choose

The instruction from the organizers decides it. Where you get a choice, landscape suits a different kind of argument.

Follow the acceptance email first — North American meetings commonly quote the board as 8 x 4 ft, which is landscape.
Landscape suits work with several parallel strands: multi-arm trials, sub-studies, method comparisons.
It takes a fourth column comfortably, which the same size in portrait cannot without narrowing every column.

Landscape poster layout: how many columns fit

Four columns is what landscape buys you, and it is the reason to choose it.

Column count is not a style preference — it follows from board width. A landscape A0 is 46.81 in across, which divides into four columns of roughly 11 inches: wider than the three columns a portrait A0 gives you. That is the whole case for landscape. The trade-off is vertical room: each column is shorter, so a tall figure has to be re-cropped rather than dropped in. Classic still gives RESULTS the widest column if one figure carries the argument; Four column suits several parallel strands; Spotlight puts one finding at the center with detail at the sides.
